SENIOR MEDICAL
TRAVEL
Purpose of
Program
The purpose of the Senior Medical Travel program is to offer medical
transportation to the senior citizens and disable of Roseau County.
The program has been in operation since April 1979 and serves people 60
years of age and older, or disabled, who hesitate to drive longer
distances and in larger cities. Many do not have family or friends
to do the driving for them.
Minority and low-income individuals are encouraged to use the service.
Others of all age groups may use the transportation program for
non-medical or medical reasons as long as at least one senior citizen is
going for a medical reason.
The program will also serve individuals under 60 years of age if they
are covered by Medical Assistance and Social Services approves the trip.
Courteous and Helpful Volunteer Drivers
Pick up the participants at their place of residence, deliver them
directly to the doctor's office, clinic, or hospital, and return them to
their home or facility. The drivers offer their assistance to
those needing it, those who are handicapped, or those unsure of
themselves in new situations. The drivers willingly volunteer
their time and vehicle to make the program possible. They are
reimbursed a certain amount per mile for their gas and also for meals.
Trips Are Scheduled
Trips are offered as needed to Thief River Falls, Grand Forks, Bemidji,
Baudette and International Falls. Veteran trips are made to the VA
Hospitals in Fargo, Grand Forks, Grafton and Bemidji. The program
is able to reach within a 200 mile radius of the county line. We
will travel as far as the Twin Cities or Rochester if Social Services
approves the trip.
Call the Program Coordinator
at 463-3177 to arrange for a ride. If you plan to use the Senior
Medical Travel Program please call at least three days in advance of
your doctor appointment. It saves time and money when we can
combine trips.
Costs
Participants are encouraged to contribute to the program on a per mile
basis. They will be given the total cost of the trip (currently at
$.50 per mile). If unable to pay the cost, contact the program
coordinator. All contributions make it possible for this program
to continue to serve Roseau County.
